Description
How do I do this? is a series for Clunes artists to share work, discuss ideas, build community, and connect with audiences, with a different artist presenting each month.
Month Three: Thembi Soddell
Dr Thembi Soddell is an award-winning sound artist and researcher whose key interest lies in the unsettling nature of abstract, acousmatic sound and its potential for generating new understandings of madness and trauma. Using large PAs or structural multispeaker installations, they offer audiences intense encounters with the psychological impact of sound and darkness.
For this session they’ll be sharing something new for their practice: audio-visual explorations. This includes an installation work-in-progress, as well as a video that was commissioned by Chamber Made for the Now or Never Festival in 2025. They’ll then facilitate a discussion around the work and its themes.
This work has emerged from creative research into the ongoing impact of intergenerational trauma on what we often call “mental health” – those things our ancestors experienced that may be unknown to us but still live within us, shaping the way we perceive and relate to the world around us. Creative experimentation has involved drawing on family archives and ‘processing’ what they’ve found through performance and sound, with a particular focus on their Polish grandparents' volatile relationship in the aftermath of WWII in Poland and their subsequent displacement.
A heads up that there is some representation of verbal abuse in the work and the discussion may explore themes of relationship conflict and war trauma, depending on how it unfolds. You can contact Thembi through their website with any questions: https://www.thembisoddell.com/contact/
